SRG Global™ Awards Coach Builder Design Award

Award presented to Lawrence Technological University student as part of design competition

WARREN, Michigan, January 13, 2014

SRG Global Inc. presented a Coach Builder Design Award to Daniel Kangas, a Lawrence Technological University (LTU) student who participated in a semester-long design competition sponsored by SRG Global.

The award was presented by Patrick Ayoub, SRG Global™ Creative Director of Design and Marketing, during the Motorcity Automotive Industry Night (MAIN) Event on Sun., Jan. 12, amid the artful ambience of Detroit’s beautifully restored Orchestra Hall.

From L-R: Ahmed Ghamloush, Daniel Kangas, Greg VanderVoord, Jacob Lanyon, and SRG Global Creative Director of Design & Marketing, Patrick Ayoub.

The brainchild of Ayoub and Keith Nagara, Director of Transportation Design at LTU, the project challenged students to design a SRG Global-branded vehicle that incorporated the company’s products as well as future technologies and trends.

Kangas’ winning design will become SRG Global’s virtual car, and will be used on the company’s Web site, and incorporated into the company’s suite of mobile applications as a way to showcase its products and finishes. A global supplier of chrome plated plastic parts and high-value coatings, SRG Global manufactures grilles, nameplates, rocker panels, door handles, body side moldings, and other decorative trim.

“We chose to work with LTU because Keith Nagara’s program focuses on both the aesthetic and feasibility factors of design,” said Ayoub. “This was an important consideration since we were asking the students to develop a car that is both future forward and able to realistically showcase all of the components SRG Global is producing today.”

Similar in approach to a coach builder design studio, the students were challenged with designing a car from scratch, without affiliaton to a known automotive brand.

“Professional automotive designers get an opportunity once in a lifetime, if they are lucky, to design a vehicle from a clean sheet of paper similar to the coach builders of the crafts era,” said LTU’s Nagara. “The Coach Builder Award perfectly characterizes the project to the level of design perfection that was required from the proportions of the vehicle concept down to the details of the components – just as the great masters started the process on automobiles in the craft era. We feel very privileged to have our students get that unique opportunity at LTU.”

Kangas received $1,500 for the winning design. In addition, three runners-up were named. Jacob Lanyon was named first runner-up, receiving $500, and Greg VanderVoord and Ahmed Ghamloush were named second and third runners-up, respectively, each receiving a $250 award.
