SRG Global™, Winning Futures Join to Create “The Intern Connection”

WARREN, Michigan, Oct. 14, 2010

As the economy continues to struggle and Michigan graduates leave the state in record numbers, SRG Global™, one of the world’s leading providers of advanced, high value coatings on plastics for the automotive, commercial trucking, and household appliance industries, has not lost sight of the importance of offering internships to high school students in their local communities in order to educate them about the way of business and the opportunities that exist in our state.

Today, SRG Global reaffirmed that commitment by announcing, in conjunction with Winning Futures, the creation of a unique educational program called “The Intern Connection” that will culminate with a competition for a summer internship at SRG Global. Winning Futures is an award-winning nonprofit school-based mentoring organizationThis is a first-of-its-kind collaboration for the two organizations, and demonstrates the potential impact of corporate and nonprofit partnerships in educating our young people. The announcement was made by Kevin Baird, president and CEO of SRG Global, and Kristina Marshall, president and CEO of Winning Futures. The program kicked off today at SRG Global’s headqaurters in Warren, Mich.

“Education, particularly in math and the sciences, is the focus of our community outreach efforts,” said Baird. “We have been a supporter of Winning Futures for a number of years, and this is a natural joining of our philosophy and Winning Futures’ mission.”

“It is rare that you find a corporation willing to go beyond the level of monetary support, but is willing to take an active role in a program,” said Marshall. “SRG Global not only opened its doors to us, but was an active partner in creating the program and curriculum in which our students will be participating.”

The Intern Connection Program DetailsThe Intern Connection connects the classroom and the workplace through a hands-on, innovative learning experience to promote real-world learning opportunities to high school students. The program consists of a series of seminars presented once a month over a period of seven months. Both SRG Global and Winning Futures will present on topics specific to each organization’s expertise – corporate and industrial topics by SRG Global, and associated life skills topics by Winning Futures. Topics include:

  • Engineering and Program Management (SRG Global)
  • Engineering Your Career Path (Wining Futures)
  • Purchasing and Finance (SRG Global)
  • Financing Your Future (Winning Futures)
  • Manufacturing (SRG Global)
  • Manufacturing Your Work Place Attitude (Winning Futures)

Other seminars cover information technology, human resources, interviewing techniques, and self-marketing. Presentations last approximately 20 – 30 min., and will be presented by SRG Global staff and Winning Futures representatives. As the seminars draw to a close in March 2011, students will be invited to participate in the internship competition. Students that have partipated it the program will be asked to develop a one page essay detailing why they would be a good candidate for the internship for SRG Global™. Essays will then be judged, and if they achieve a 75 – 85 percent scoring ratio, the student moves on to the interview phase. Interviews will be conducted by two SRG Global representatives and one Winning Futures representative.

The winning student will participate in a six-week summer paid internship program, which will consist of a variety of assignments that rotate on a weekly basis. Upon the conclusion of the program, the intern will be required to write a one page exit paper regarding the internship experience, along with participation in an exit interview with SRG Global Human Resources personnel. Students from Warren Mott High School’s business class will be the first participants in the program.

“We are honored to have been chosen as the high school participating in this incredible competition,” commented Linda Kay, Business Teacher at Warren Mott High School. “Our business students are looking forward to the priceless hands-on experience they will be receiving as they engage themselves in real life business situations.”
